MIEKE D is a Brooklyn-based artist, educator, and cultural worker who seeks to destabilize rigid definitions of race, gender, and nationhood through movement, performance, and storytelling.
Mieke’s original solos and duets have been presented at Brooklyn Arts Exchange, the Nuyorican Poets Café, Dixon Place, Dance New Amsterdam, Under St. Marks, Bushwick Open Arts, NYU, and the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics. Favorite collaborators, past and present, include: the EmergeLAB @ BAX, NEEDING IT ALL: A Beautiful Desperation, Zavé Martohardjono, Kyoung Park, Julia Crockett & Colin Self, La Pocha Nostra, Taylor Mac, Brooke O’Harra & the Dyke Division of the Two-Headed Calf, Target Margin, Stephen Wangh, and John Jeserun.
She has worked with Cornerstone Theater Company, the Foundry, and now Ping Chong & Company (PCC) to produce community-based performances about place, identity, and collective transformation. Along with Sara Zatz, she is the proud co-writer and co-director of Say My Name, Say My Name, a documentary-based performance in collaboration with PCC and BreakOUT!, a social justice organization challenging the criminalization of LGBTQ youth in New Orleans.
